Day 49 & 50 – 10 & 11 May 19. Zero at Kennedy Meadows

Today Zero distance

It rained pretty hard in the night but I stayed nice and dry. I was waiting at 0800 for Grumpy’s to open for one of their famous Hiker Breakfasts. There was a big cue ad the place was packed with hikers. The breakfast arrived and it was impressive. On one plate was bacon, eggs and potatoes. Overflowing the other plate was a massive pancake. I did manage to finish it but it was a struggle. It was all you can eat pancakes but very few people can managed more than one or two of the beasts. There was also endless coffee and they were nice enough to give me some real milk for this rather than having to suffer with the creamer powder which is common here.

I headed back up to Triple Crown to do my resupply. I had researched on their website and knew I could get most of my food here. Because I still had three days food leftover from the last leg I needed less than originally planned. I had estimated the next section would take 8 days and added a contingency day so I was getting 9 days worth of food.

I then sat at the area they had set up for hikers on picnic tables under a shelter and repackaged the food. I was having only freeze dry for dinners, lunch was tortilla and peanut butter and breakfast was some of my normal carnation Breakfast Powder and freeze dry. I usually don’t like a big breakfast but figured in the could I would be needing a more substantial and hot breakfast.

The freeze dry packaging is bulky and heavy so I repackage into zip lock bags and I have one foil freeze dry bag (from New Zealand) that I keep. This way to cook dinner I just pour hot water into the ziplock bag, place this inside my foil bag, wait 10 minutes, take zip lock bag out, open and fold down the top and eat directly from the zip lock bag.

I then had the fun task of making all of my food fit in my Bear Can. I managed except one dinner and one bag of peanuts.

I did a few other small chores and maintenance then back to eating and socialising. The ext day was much the same.

The topic of conversation was still about the Sierras, snow, equipment and weather. The weather was looking like it would be clearing and a group left each day. There were looking like a few groups and myself leaving leaving the next day.
