Day 58 to 62 Zero in Bishop, Independance and Lone Pine

Zero km

I enjoyed my rest time in Bishop. I spent the time eating and editing my videos. I also used the time to cancel credit card and passport and order replacements. My Mum helped out by wiring me some cash to last until my new Credit Card could be mailed.

I had lunch with the Trail Family I did Forester Pass with and it was nice to see them again. They were splitting up as everyone had made their own decisions about what to do about the snow. Two were continuing on and the remainder were going home or flipping north.

I did a reasupply and had the challenge of trying to fit 11 days food into my Bear Can. I failed but there waas no alternative as there were no options to get off prior to Mammoth, and I needed contingency food, given the strong chance of storms.

On Tuesday I packed up and walked to the diner for breakfast. Just short of the diner I started talking to 4 older bikers. They had questioned my pack and we talked aboout PCT. They were also going to the diner.

I had a nice big breakfast and as the bill arrived one of the Bikers came over and said they wanted to take care of it for me as they liked what I was doing. Once again the generosity of strangers here is amazing.

I walked to the edge of town and put my thumb out. I was not having much luck until a big truck stopped. I do not bother to put my thumb out for them as they are not allowed to stop but Edgar owned his own truck and liked to pick up people for company.

He dropped me off in Independance. I looked for somewere to eat but it is a tiny town. I stopped a local on the street and asked aboout accomodation and food options. I had decided not to head up the mountain as it looked awful and the forecast had another storm coming through. The local was helpful.

As I stood there trying to decide what to do the guy came back and said I could pitch my tent in his yard and that he had an outdoor guest bathrooom. I greatfully accepted and walked with Chris back to his place a few hundred meters away. When their Chris mentioned he had a renovated caravan for guest and I could stay there as there was rain forecast. It was a neat renovated vintage caravan that they had done a great job of decorating. They had also done some neat decoration on the bathrooom. Twice in one day I was benefiting from the generosity of strangers.

I lay there relaxing until dinner. I was about to ask Chris if he wanted something from the taco stand when he said he had extra soup and would I like to join him for dinner. I accepted and had a lovely dinner with him. We then sat and talked for ages. before I went to bed.

The next morning he had offered to take me up Onion Road to the trail head after breakfast.

When I woke up it was still a bad forecast so I decided I would head to Lone Pine for a couple of days.

We sat and talked while having coffee and then Chris dropped me off at the Hostel in Line Pine, 15 miles away.

At the hostel I booked a room but had to wait until later when it had been cleaned. They were fully booked last night so it was lucky I was able to stay with Chris.

I left my pack there and went to the nearby Alabama Hills Cafe for breakfast. Little Skittle and Jade were there so I could catch up with what had happened with them. They had got ahead of me when they woke early and I slept in as I thought. They had tried Mt Whitney but were turned back by the weather. They went over Forester Pass earlier the same day that I did and had one over Kearsarge and spent time in Bishop. They then tried to get back on the mountain but were turned back by very high winds. They were going to try again the next day.

Back at the hostel I was able to check in early and was very impressed with the room. I was in the female hostel and it had its own bathroom, kitchen and TV. It was clean and modern for only $38, including taxes, a night.

After getting supplies from the supermarket I relaxed that night and the next day.
