Quick Update – I have reached Sonora Pass

Hi

I am alive. The last section was challenging and had more scary bits than the other ones.

I am sitting above Sonora Pass as I just got a little reception but expect to lose it when I drop down.

I am only picking up food here and continuing straight on a 5 day section to South Lake Tahoe so posts will be uploaded then.

  4. Last year we watched your whole journey on the PCT. you met my mum Gail during the PCT day and she has continued her hiking group In Portland, motivated by you!

We traveled to Yosemite from Portland with our kids and even did a little bit of the PCT tho week to show them where you have been. Hope you are well. What a crazy year!

  5. Happy to watch the first few of your new videos tonight, and glad you’ve now made it through the toughest of the Sierra unscathed. Especially enjoyed seeing the High Trail sign at the Agnew Meadows trailhead as it was the start to our first Sierra hike 5 years ago, and we’ll return there later this summer. It sure looks different under all that snow!
Many of the women in one of my favorite Facebook groups, the Ladies of the JMT, have been watching your videos (as well as those of Little Skittles and her crew), and especially reveling in the posts from our favorite spots along the shared JMT-PCT path. Thank you so much for sharing your journey and we’ll look forward to more.

    1. Hi Heidi. I am glad you are following it and getting to se the places you have been under snow

  6. Hi Homemade! I’ve been checking in everyday to see how you’re doing. Your resilience and good-natured perseverance have me rooting for you all the way! I look forward to when you’re safe and can share your challenges and amazing experiences with us!

    1. Thanks Joi. I have reached my next rest stop and will be updating my blogs in the next few days

  7. Hoping to see a post from you soon. There hasn’t been any adverse weather up there but the higher temperatures are probably making the snow very difficult. Sent am email with my phone number and dates I’m available to help with rides, if it works in your schedule.

    1. Hi homemade, so glad you’re safe. I’ve been worried. I saw the video of little skittles and they had a scary adventure to south Tahoe. Glad you made it safe and I’m Looking forward to your videos. My husband and I did the jmt last summer so it has been fun watch you go through the same area in the crazy snow. You are one tough lady.

      1. Thanks Ellen. I did not have as difficult time as Little Skittle as I had as different philosophy, especially around river crossings

  8. Lovely to meet you on the trail today at Ebbetts Pass, share lunch & hear a bit about your adventures. You were certainly looking well for having been hiking for so long! Take good care & safe travels.

    1. Thanks so much for your conversation and the fruit and chocolate. I really enjoyed the apple that night.

  9. So thankful for the update and that you are doing well. Little Skittles group had posted for that section (to Sonora Pass) and the water crossings looked challenging.

You are amazing and love the snow sections where you also teach us skills.

  10. Thanks for the update. Am loving your videos of the beautiful views.
    Happy Trails.

  11. Great to receive a catch up. I have to admit I’ve been a little concerned not hearing from ‘my’ restless kiwi…I’m in New Zealand and so enjoy following you around the world.

  12. Congratulations. I’m loving the nature focus in your vlogs. Glad to hear you’ve crossed those High Sierra rivers before any more snow melts. Some looked pretty terrifying on Little Skittle’s videos. Until South Lake Tahoe I’ll make do with a few ‘fixes’ from your Te Araroa blogs.

  13. Glad to hear you are alive and well. Was growing concerned as I was not sure when you left Mammoth.
Look forward to your posts and videos. Hike On!

  14. Worried about the big stream crossings where you just were. That should be the worst of them…Sorry Tioga wSnt open. You picked an unusual but beautiful year to explore out amazing Sierra Nevada. There’s no place like here, though I do love your mountains too!
Good luck. Hear from you in Tahoe.

    1. Thanks Janet. The crossings were challenging as you will read in my soon to be posted blogs.

  15. Happy that you are safe and to hear from you. In about 9 days. I will b flying to Las Vegas…picking up my permit and start our hike june 23rd from onion valley south to mt whitney..summit on the 27th and then down to whitney portal the same day or the 28th which is our permit exit so no rush. I did this section in Sept of 2016 but this time is in June with snow and more snow melt in the creeks. My hiking buddy and I took the basic mountaineer courses in 2013. I have done 4 out of the 5 volcanic mountains in Washington state…I’ll do glacier peak in July. Plus I’ve done rock climbing and bagged over 50 peaks the past 40 yrs. I also took the 1st mountaineer training when I was 20 but now I’m 66 and still going strong. So my point is…I’m not worried but concerned with what we might come against…creek crossing and soft snow after 11AM. Especially when climbing steep terrain. I’m trying to decide if microspikes be enough or take crampons? We are only hiking for 5 or 6 days so I’m wearing my mountaineer boots which I feel comfy especially in the snow. We are going to bring a 48 ft rope (only weights 9oz) in case we need to hip belay each other across heavy rushing water creeks…anyway just being cautious and prepared. Still going to try to keep my pack at 26 pds.
    Keep on hiking…safely!

    1. Best of luck for your hike. It will be challenging but it sounds like you are prepared. I am not sure what the snow will be like there. I do know that for the last two weeks I have been glad of the bigger spikes with my crampons

  16. You’re through the worst of it now. Of course, there will still be snow, but there are no more dangerous river crossings. Can’t wait to read your next update!

  17. Hello! and I’m glad you’re still alive! I’ve been wondering about you and looking forward to your emails. I have been following you & your journey for about a month now. You are an inspiration!! My GF & I are doing a section from Ebbetts Pass TH to Barker Pass, Tahoe TH in late August. (My first major hike). Can’t wait!
    Stay Safe & Happy Trails!!
