Day 24 – 13 Jul, Kilpisjarven Retkeilykeskus

(1 km, total 570.5 km, 30 min, 0950 to 1020)

I woke up later than I thought and was quickly packed away. Back on the road the final km went quickly and I had a check if my room was ready yet. It wasn’t which was not surprising so I went to the cafe foor a coffee and to start sorting photos and videos. I went up for a second coffee and started chatting with the waitress. She had visited NZ and was interested in the hike I was doing. She refused payment for the second coffee which was nice. I hung out there until 1200 when the kitchen opened and got a pizza. It was huge but I finished the whole thing and it was great.
I checked back with reception and my room was ready. I had a long shower and relaxed until 1600 when the sauna was on. This was my first Finnish Sauna. It was interesting that the Finnish Ladies did not acknowledge the other people in there. It seems to be a place of quiet and reflection. Also they did not stay in long, usually around 5 minutes. I enjoyed the experience.
I worked on updating my blog until dinner where I had a Moose and Blue Cheese burger which was fantastic. At 2000 my allotted laundry time I picked up the key and washed everything, including my town clothes. I wandered to the laundry in my rainskirt and down jacket.
Then I relaxed, finishing my grapes. It was really nice to have fresh fruit.

  1. Hi! I’m another Kiwi currently hiking the E1 which follows the same route as NPL at first. I’m about a week behind you and have been enjoying seeing your name in the hut books and seeing another wee “NZ” above mine. I doubt I’ll catch you but hope you’re having a great time 🙂

    1. Hi Kim. Would be great to catch up but a week is a lot to catch up, unless you are really fast. Nice to know there is another Kiwi on the trail. Are you doing a blog as it is always interesting to read other people’s experiences of the same trail. Pity we couldn’t catch up and compare notes before we started
